Canvas Creations
Preliminary SketchExceeding Work |
Lady by the WaterReflectionMy major project for February was a mixed-media project. I used a lot of supplies-canvas, acrylic paint, fabric paint, paper towels, Elmer’s glue, hot glue, clay, artificial plants, fabric, greenery filler, wire, newspaper, wig hair, paper maché, twine, and wood. I spent around sixty hours on this project start to finish. I think one of the strong points of my project is its originality. I have not seen anything quite like this before. I would have liked to put different plants in the background. I am not sure if I am pleased with how that part looks. The unity of the project is the colors cream and green along with nature. I look at this project serenity, tranquility, and peacefulness comes to mind. I think it is pleasing to the eye, because it gives you such a good feeling. Shape was an important element in this project. I had to pay a lot of attention to shape while I was sculpting the lady to make it look most realistic. I believe that Lady by the Water has good asymmetrical balance. The lady herself is balance by the edge of the water and greenery. I learned that when doing a project like this it is important to start from the background and work towards the foreground for best results. Patience was required in constructing this as there were many new things to try and to fail along with multiple drying periods.
To create this I started by drawing out a rough sketch of the picture on the canvas. Then with paper towels and glue I sculpted up the body of the lady. Next I placed a layer of paper maché over the paper towels. Next I painted the background and put a layer of newspaper over the paper maché to smooth it out. I painted the lady after that. I then built the umbrella with the wire, fabric, and hot glue. I made the hat next out of wire and twine and attached the hair with hot glue. Next I put the clothing on the lady. To finish, I glued all the greenery on. I had found this picture and really liked it, but I did not want to ruin it by painting it. That is not really one of my strengths, so I came up with a new way to reproduce it. I planned to make a 3D portrait, but I did not make a very clear plan for how I would do it. I just hopped right in and started to make it, mostly because I was so excited about it. Next time I would probably plan it out a little better. I am glad I created this project. I tried something new and I am happy with how it turned out. My next project will probably be a photography portfolio, because I will spend half of the month in France. |
