Sailor Love
Reflection
I spent the month of January working on this drawing. I used pencil to depict a father walking with his son. I think that it is an eye-appealing piece, because the values and perspectives make sense. It looks like it could be real. I could have done a better job getting values into the clothes on the men. There is not much of a value scale in their appearal. What I was trying to communicate is that fathers are role models whether they like it or not. Children look up to their parents and want to be just like them, so it is important for adults to be positive role models. Two important elements in my drawing are line and value. Both were essential in making my work look realistic. There is a great emphasis on the people in the foreground. They were the main subject. There is also variety in the trees and plants. They look uniform, but they are not identical. I struggled on this project. I have been working more with charcoal lately, so it was tough not applying those same principles. Drawing with pencil is very different from drawing with charcoal. I learned to persevere and push on until I was finished. I started this project with a grid and drew out the generally shapes and outlines of the picture. Then I tossed the picture and put basic values in. After that, I just picked places to "fix" and sharpen up. I planned to do the project this way, because it is easier for me to visualize things this way. I think this was a worthwile project. I really enjoyed it and it is always good to go back to the basics of just pencil and paper every now and again. Next, I am going to experiment with a 3D painting to switch things up.
